Block 1 Lecture 2 Reflection: Study Design, Sampling Techniques, and EndNote Training (18 July)
Block 1 Lecture 2 Reflection: Study Design, Sampling Techniques, and EndNote Training (18 July)
1. Description
The second day of Block 1 focused on study design, sampling techniques, and reference management using EndNote. The morning session included practical exercises on study design and discussions on sampling methods, sample size, and power calculations. The second session introduced us to the library digital resources and the use of EndNote for managing citations. We were also given Assignment 1, the first draft of our research proposal, due in two weeks.
2. Feelings
I approached this day with a mix of anticipation and determination. Although the first day had left me slightly overwhelmed, I revised my previous notes on research design and data to feel more prepared. I was excited but also anxious about the short submission deadline. When we began reviewing Assignment 1, I felt motivated but nervous. I had clarity about the structure yet worried about completing it in time.
The EndNote session was a relief as it made referencing more manageable as I was used to the old way of manually referencing and gave me a sense of control over my work.
3. Evaluation
This lecture was practical and empowering. The session on study design clarified how to align a research question with an appropriate design and something I had previously struggled with. Prof Tonya explained these concepts in a relatable way, making them easier to apply. The EndNote training was a breakthrough for me and it eliminated confusion about citations and improved my confidence in academic writing. However, the short turnaround time for the assignment created pressure and highlighted my need to improve on time management.
4. Analysis
I realised that sampling and study design form the backbone of valid research. This lecture helped me connect theory with practice and appreciate how proper planning ensures accurate results. Understanding sample size showed me that reliability depends on methodological soundness. The EndNote session helped me appreciate the role of digital tools in improving efficiency and maintaining integrity in academic work.
5. Conclusion
By the end of this session, I understood that discipline and preparation are essential for success in research. This block improved both my technical and organisational skills. It strengthened my confidence in drafting Assignment 1.
6. Action Plan
Going forward, I plan to:
• Use EndNote consistently to organise references.
• Set weekly writing targets to manage large assignments.
